It is unfortunate that we Catholics in America are not familiar with many practices of traditional Catholic culture that are found in other lands. One of these is the devotion to a group of saints known as the “Fourteen Holy Helpers.” This devotion arose in medieval times, particularly in Germany during the time of the Black Plague. Each of the saints honored in this group was found to be particularly efficacious in various needs....

Over the past few months the toppling of statues in city squares has been much in the news. It began with the removal of statues depicting Confederate generals. After all, it was argued, they fought to retain slavery, and we can all agree that slavery is evil and a stain on our history. But what began as an effort to eliminate the statues of Confederate heroes quickly escalated to many other statues, particularly those with religious symbolism....

The southwestern part of the United States was originally part of the vast Spanish-held territory that included Mexico, as well as Central America and most of South America. One night toward the end of 1942, a young black man, Claude Newman, having hidden in the home of his grandmother’s abusive ex-husband, shot and killed the man as soon as he entered. Taking his victim’s money, Newman fled to Arkansas. The next month, law enforcement officials tracked Claude down and returned him to Vicksburg, Mississippi, where he was tried and found guilty, and sentenced to be electrocuted the following January, 1944....

The Power Behind Miracles

My dear parishioners, we read in today’s Gospel about two of Our Lord’s miracles. One of them took place when a woman who merely touched His garment was healed from a serious malady. The second one was Our Lord raising a girl from the dead, or from being seemingly dead — after all, He said that the girl was asleep. In any case, it was a miracle. There was faith being exhibited here on the part of the ruler: “Come and lay Thy hand upon her and she will return to life.” In the woman’s case, she didn’t even ask, but only thought to herself, “If I can just touch the hem of His garment I will be healed.” So I would like to speak about faith today,...

Before the fall of Adam and Eve, the lower nature of man was perfectly subject to the superior nature of his soul, which is reason, and he loved his Creator, dedicating himself wholly to God’s service. God made man well-ordered and right; not in the disordered condition in which we find ourselves. When man rebelled against God by sinning, however, his sensitive lower nature rebelled against his higher nature – his reason. This is why emotions and impulses which are contrary to our reason arise in us whether we like it or not....
