The Galatians Resistance Argument: Can Catholics Resist the Pope?
A lecture given at the 2022 Fatima Conference by Rev. Fr. Gabriel M. Lavery, CMRI
This lecture is on the Galatians so-called “resistance quote,” where St. Paul says that he resisted Peter to his face in chapter 2 of Galatians. I wanted to explain briefly why I’m giving the talk. In 2013, Fr. Benedict asked if I would write an article on it, but I never got around to it. And so, in the planning for the Conference, I thought, well, maybe rather than an article, I’ll finally get around to researching the topic and make it a lecture instead. And as it turns out, it’s providential because the quote and the argument have come up several times in just the last few weeks, including a report that Athanasius Schneider brought it up two weeks ago in Pittsburgh. And near where I am in Ohio, The Remnant had a conference, Catholic Identity Conference, in which the theme basically was this argument of resisting the pope. So I am introducing this lecture with a two-minute clip from that conference where they’re using this argument, as well as another famous so-called resistance argument from St. Robert Bellarmine...

The Image of God
by Rev. Fr. Benedict Hughes, CMRI
According to St. Paul, “our wrestling is not against flesh and blood, but against the Principalities and the Powers, against the world-rulers of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness on high” (Eph. 6:12). In other words, we are engaged in a spiritual battle for the salvation of souls against the forces of hell. It is most important to frequently remind ourselves of this truth, lest we be misled into thinking of our battle merely in terms of political considerations....

Infallibility: A Charism of Christ’s Church (Part II)
by Rev. Fr. Brendan Hughes, CMRI
The magisterium represents the authority of Christ in His Church, and teaches with secure confidence in the enlivening influence of the Holy Ghost, Who is the Soul of the Church. The Catholic hierarchy alone enjoys this authority in teaching. Those who refuse assent to the Church’s magisterial teaching sever themselves, by that fact, from the Catholic, or universal, body...

Excommunicated! The Life and Thoughts of Rev. Father Joaquin Sáenz Arriaga, SJ (Part IV)
by Antonio Rius Facius, Translated by Rev. Fr. Ephrem Cordova, CMRI
Upon leaving the leadership of the Marian Congregations and the UFEC, Don Joaquín accepted the transfer to his new destination, this time to the city of Puebla. The Instituto de Oriente, run by Jesuits, suffered a certain degree of decline, not only academic, but also religious and even social. Fr. Esteban Palomera Quiroz, S.J., had been appointed rector. Don Joaquín collaborated closely with him from the day of his arrival in the Angelopolitan capital. In the Church of the Holy Spirit, better known as “of the Company,” Fr. Sáenz assumed the position of director of the Congregations and, in the Institute, he took care of the spiritual direction of the young people...

American Heroes of the Faith: Catholic Heroes of the Pen
by Rev. Fr. Benedict Hughes, CMRI
In addition to the many great missionaries, bishops, priests, religious and laity who spread the Faith in our country, we must not forget to mention the heroes of the pen. These writers promoted the Catholic Faith through their explanation and defense of Church doctrine and history. Especially in the 19th century, when the sentiment of many non-Catholics was distrustful of Catholicism, if not downright antagonistic, these Catholic writers contributed greatly to the promotion of the Catholic religion...

“Come, Infant Jesus!” The Miracle That Made a Communist Teacher Go Mad
by Eugenia Guzman
The marvelous miracle we are about to recount took place in communist-controlled Hungary nearly 70 years ago, around Christmastime of 1956. Report of the prodigy, entirely true and widely-known there, reached the West through a Father Norbert who served as a parish priest in Budapest before fleeing to the West from the Marxist persecution against Catholics in his country...

A Light to the Revelation of the Gentiles
My dearly beloved in Christ, it is wonderful that we have this year the feast of the Epiphany on a Sunday. As you know, the Epiphany is fixed on the date of January 6th, which, according to a fairly strong tradition, was the exact day that the Magi came to worship the Christ child. But we don’t know what year it was—it could have been even a full year after our Lord was born. The Magi came from a great distance. We notice in the Gospel that Herod inquired diligently the time that the star had appeared to them. And then he sent his soldiers to slay all the boy babies who were two years old and under. So perhaps it was a good year, or even more, from the time Our Lord was born before the Magi came...

True Devotion to Mary (Part 8)
by Rev. Fr. Dominic Radecki, CMRI
St. Louis Marie de Montfort describes several particular exterior practices of this devotion. Although devotion to Our Lady is essentially interior, there are several exterior practices that are very important. If a person leads a sinful life and makes no effort to amend, his devotion is false, even though he may exteriorly express it. When our exterior acts of devotion are performed with the pure intention of pleasing and glorifying God, they will edify our neighbor and deepen our inner union with Jesus and Mary...

"Behold the Handmaid of the Lord"
The theme for this year’s Fatima Conference was taken from the wonderful account of the annunciation of the angel Gabriel to Our Lady as related in the Gospel of St. Luke.
It is a scene we have all pictured in our minds countless times as we prayed the Joyful mysteries of the Rosary. The young virgin Mary kneels alone in her home in silent prayer, absorbed in God...
