The Vile Representation of a Great Saint

In his encyclical letter on St. Francis of Assisi, Pope Pius XI, in 1926, warned the world against a false devotion to this seraphic saint: “All of this [his love of nature, poetry, patriotism, fraternal charity] is quite admirable but it is the least that is to be praised in Our Saint, and it all must be understood in a correct sense.” It is precisely for possessing these “virtues” that his namesake is receiving universal praise, all the while destroying the Church which St. Francis worked so hard to re-build.
