AdsumMay 2005Reply to a Concerned Adsum ReaderAn anonymous letter (postmarked from Royal Oak, Michigan) raised a concern about the article in the March issue of the Adsum in which a comparison was made between the Liturgy and the Manna of the Old Testament. Our concerned reader writes that: “This is misleading. The liturgy is not the fulfillment of the sign of the manna — the Eucharist is...” Response: 1. The concerns raised by our reader are misleading. He takes what we wrote “The sacred liturgy is like the manna...” and changes it into something never stated nor intended: ”... is the fulfillment ...” Of course, the manna prefigured the Holy Eucharist as we see in the Gospel of St. John, Chapter 6. 2. Nevertheless, Dom Gueranger, O.S.B., Abbot of Solesmes, in his famous collection, “The Liturgical Year” (1916), made the very same comparison that was printed in the March issue of the Adsum: “But in nothing is the excellency of the liturgy so apparent, as its being milk for children and solid food for the strong; thus resembling the miraculous bread of the desert, and taking every kind of taste according to the different dispositions of those who eat.” Back to May 2005 Newsletter Printed copies of Adsum, a publication by the seminarians of Mater Dei Seminary for the reading enjoyment of friends and benefactors, are sent free of charge to all who request it.
